John

John began selling the paper after befriending Candy, a former Spare Change vendor, who later trained John to become versed in sales. He says that prior to involvement with the street newspaper, he had no means of extra income beyond the small disability payment he receives from the state each month. In the past, securing regular employment was difficult for John, who lives with Cerebral Palsy and relies on a motorized chair for mobility.

However, John's future prospects look brighter, thanks to his high motivation and hard work. He has pursued higher education for many years, and now possesses an Associates Degree in Human Services from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Cambridge College. John says that while studying, selling Spare Change helped him pay for scholastic necessities, such as his books.

John is currently undergoing training with Easter Skills, an organization that counsels him on customer service skills and career opportunities. He says that in the future he hopes to secure a paid position as a Human Rights Officer in a hospital. John currently works as a volunteer in such a position at a hospital in Somerville. He explains that after living his entire life with Cerebral Palsy, he has had to consistently fight for his own human rights.

Take a break from the bustle of Downtown Boston to pay John a visit and hear his story for yourself. You will no doubt be impressed.

Homepages are a great idea!

I love the idea of homepages. Especially since it allows me to leave a comment about one of my favorite vendors. John is always a pleasure, always ready with a smile. And now that I've heard a bit more of his story, we have more to chat about next time I see him.

Best of luck, John!

John in Downtown Crossing

Hi -

I support the vendors when I can. Since I work in Downtown Crossing, I often see John. The issue of SCN today had John's sticker on it, which steered me to your website to look up his bio. I was happy to learn that he is a UNH grad, as am I!

John has always been polite and I think his story is great. I wish him the best of luck.

Thank you and keep up the good work.
