Nathaniel is autistic. I don’t know where Nathaniel, Richard, Keith, and Natalie are. The state stole my kids from me because I’m an epileptic.

I do alright for myself. I spend time with Nitanju almost every day and I spend time with Joshua on the first Saturday of each month.

I am good at doing many different things. In high school, I took woodworking, drafting, typing, chorus, and home economics. I was captain of the girls’ JV basketball, JV baseball, JV cheerleading and JV majorette teams.

After I graduated from high school, I did many things. I’ve worked as an Assistant Meteorologist for the East Coast, as a perfume salesperson, as a private housekeeper, as a general laborer at Labor Ready, an industrial laborer for Winchester Industries, as a deli clerk at Super Stop & Shop, as a private mediator and social worker, as a temporary housing advocate for Finex House, and now as a Spare Change News vendor.

Two articles have been written about me, as well as a chapter in the book, “Getting Out” by Anne Goetting, who is a Professor of Criminology and Psychiatry at the University of Kentucky in Bowling Green. I wrote about my experience of being a battered woman and gave it to her so she could tell my story in “Getting Out.” If you find the book, you’ll love reading it. It’s a real tearjerker.

I like being a Spare Change News vendor. When my father was alive, he tried to insult me by calling me a “jack of all trades and master of none.” Today, I wear this phrase as a badge of honor because I love helping people. I love learning things all the time. I’m hyperactive and I’m naturally talented.

I paint, draw, write poetry and sometimes music. I sing and dance and I play the piano and guitar. I love to read and listen to music. I like opera and ballet and any type of art that expresses life in a simple and truthful manner.

I like anything that’s old. I collect old coins, dollars, stamps, comic books and baseball cards. I like natural colors. I love Kermit the Frog from Sesame Street. I love it when Kermit sings “It’s Not Easy Being Green.”

On behalf of reader Steve Sarro

I picked up a copy of the Spare Change News this evening from Beatrice outside the Prudential Center and promised her I would check out the column she wrote and let you guys know what I think. I have to admit I don't live in District 7 and won't have a vote in the election for Chuck Turner's replacement, but nonetheless I was interested to read Beatrice's recap of the visit by the three candidates (since the article went to print it is now down to just two, Tito Jackson and Cornell Mills). I thought that all three candidates had good points on the issues of housing, education, jobs and violence- I agree with both Mills and Jackson that empty buildings need to be fixed up and used for *affordable* housing (this also creates jobs and helps the local economy), and both of them had strong points about education being incredibly important not just for children but also for their parents as well. Tito Jackson made a very good point about the fact that many are in situations where they see selling drugs and/or stealing as their only real way to make a living- if people are going to make the effort to better educate themselves and seek better opportunities in their lives, which is a more challenging path but also much more rewarding in the end- they need to feel confident that they are going to get results from their hard work and sacrifice, and I admit I don't know what we can do about that. Jackson also made a great point about the vicious cycle where a person who has served time in jail is released only to find there aren't many options available to them, so they feel almost forced to revert back to the same activity that gets them put back in jail, and it can be a hopeless situation. These are very large issues that will not have quick or easy results; I sincerely hope that whoever is elected to Turner's former seat will find creative ways to set their ideas into action. My compliments to Beatrice for a well-written, informative and thought-provoking article, I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Spare Change + Beatrice

I used to work in the Financial District but I've been transplanted to the Christian Science Complex accross from the Prudential. I didn't see many sellers of Spare Change nearby like I did downtown, so I was thrilled when I found Beatrice!

And to boot, she is the nicest Spare Change seller I've yet found.

Your Comment

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate you buying the paper and giving me a nice report to my boss. Thank you Laura. I hope I see you again soon outside the Cheesecake Factory.
